Sinking into Chaos
Sinking into Chaos struggles to stand up straight. This asymmetrical work is constructed with a random weave skeleton, which echoes unpredictability and visually embodies the disorder suggested by the title. The thin paper skin covering the armature serves as a metaphor for vulnerability, emphasizing how easily structure can be disrupted. The paper is embellished with the Japanese ink marbling technique of suminigashi. This technique, with its unpredictable flow of ink, reinforces the idea that chaos cannot be contained or predicted, directly linking the visual effect to the theme of instability. The swirling ink patterns evoke a sense of volatility, mirroring uncertainty and the precariousness of balance. The bottom half of the work is painted with graphite paint. Graphite’s darkness intensifies a mood of erosion and anxiety.
Each artistic choice, from the construction method to the application of materials, contributes to a cohesive exploration of chaos and vulnerability.
