Gutted

<< Back

Gutted is an organic shaped vessel that speaks to the erosion of transparency. The foundational armature that forms this work is a random weave structure. Layered atop this skeleton is Chiri bark paper, a traditional Japanese material flecked with mulberry bark which is renowned for its strength and delicate translucency. While Chiri bark paper usually allows light to shine through, the vessel’s interior is coated with a layer of graphite paint which deliberately blocks the natural translucency of the material-symbolizing how easy it is to obscure transparency. Gutted invites viewers to consider: In an age of growing cloudiness where does truth reside, and what do we lose when we can no longer see clearly?
